From: Alice Boccia Paterakis
Date: October 27, 2014
Two Archaeological Field Conservators for 6 weeks each

The Kaman-Kalehöyük archaeological excavation in Central Turkey is seeking two Field Conservators for 6 weeks each in the months of July, August, and September in 2015. The first work period will begin on June 29, 2015, and end on August 8, 2015. The second work period will begin on August 6, 2015, and end on September 19, 2015. This 2-day overlap will allow a smooth transition between the work periods for the changing conservators. The excavation is run by the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology that is sponsored by the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan (MECCJ), a research institute based in Tokyo. The Kaman-Kalehoyuk excavation has been running annually since 1986. In 2009 excavation of two new mound sites commenced, Yassıhöyük and Büklükale, located approximately 20 to 30 km from Kaman in Central Anatolia. The primary cultural levels are Hittite, Phrygian, and Islamic.

The Field Conservator will manage an active conservation program including the training of one conservation student intern (of 6-week duration), supervision of their laboratory research projects, lifting and first aid operations in the field, processing and treatment of artifacts, digital imaging, database documentation, and artifact condition surveys. The conservation laboratory moved into new facilities in 2009. The well-equipped conservation lab and comfortable living facilities compensate the long workday (starting at 5:00 am). The Field Conservator has the opportunity to collaborate with an international team of archaeologists, osteoarchaeologists, archaeobotanists, etc. The new Kalehöyük Archaeological Museum opened to the public in July 2010.

Applicants must be fluent in English, have a degree in conservation or the equivalent, and a minimum of two seasons experience on an archaeological excavation. Interested applicants should contact Alice Boccia Paterakis. Information on salary and working conditions will be provided. Please send your Curriculum Vitae and the EMAIL ADDRESSES of three references by the deadline of November 25, 2014. A decision will be made at the end of November since visa applications must be submitted in early December 2014.
