Archaeological General Survey in Central Anatolia

About the Survey

Every year from 1986 to 2007, Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology conducted an archaeological general survey in Central Anatolia, as well as excavation research at Kaman-Kalehöyük. During the survey, the team measures, describes, and photographs each site that is found, and performs a surface collection of artifacts for analysis. The survey has two main purposes. One is to place unreported sites on the map and to date and classify them based on site morphology and the types of artifacts collected. The other is to compare the sites to Kaman-Kalehöyük to determine the regional extent of the cultural characteristics uncovered at Kaman-Kalehöyük. To date, 1500 mound and level sites have been surveyed in Kırşehir, Kırıkkale, Ankara, Yozgat, Nevşehir, Aksaray, Niğde, Kayseri and Konya provinces. Every year, survey reports are published in Anatolian Archaeological Studies.
